Welcome to Lawrence University!

Below is information on how to activate your Lawrence account, access your Lawrence email, Star Rez and Voyager. We also have a list of recommended tech items to bring to campus.

Steps To Activating Your Lawrence Account

Please activate your Lawrence account as soon as possible.

Once activated, this allows you to access your Lawrence email, the network (once here), Voyager—the online place where you’ll be able to register for classes, and (eventually) check your grades, the bookstore, and Star Rez—where you’ll apply for housing. Once your deposit is accepted by the university, your Lawrence account credentials will appear in your application status portal

If you have questions or run into problems, please contact the helpdesk by phone 920-832-6570 or by email helpdesk@lawrence.edu. We're open Monday-Friday 8 am - 5 pm, with some exceptions for holidays. A tech will reach back out as soon as possible.

Step 1: Activate your Lawrence account

1. Go to https://www.office.com.
2. Click Sign in (either center or top right corner).
3. Enter your username, found on your deposit confirmation letter (or your application status portal), and then add “@lawrence.edu”
4. Click Next.
5. Enter the password found on your deposit confirmation letter and then click Sign In.
6. Click Next at the More information required prompt. At this point you will be required to setup two multifactor authentication (aka MFA) methods. Follow prompts to set your two methods.

Technology Services requires setting up two methods. Your choices are:

  • Microsoft Authenticator App - Technology Services recommends this option to be setup as your DEFAULT sign in option.  This option requires you to download and use the app on your smart phone.

  • Phone – call or text

  • Alternative Phone

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: you will need to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app as your primary method in order to access your account, due to phone numbers being restricted to countries/geographic locations. To best set up the app, please click on this link for instructions.

To set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you will need both your mobile phone and a computer available as both devices are required to set it up. For anyone traveling or expecting to travel outside of the United States, you must set up the Microsoft Authenticator app to ensure you can access your Lawrence account because you may not be able to receive calls or texts using your US phone numbers.  You may also add international phone numbers if needed.

  • From the computer: click Add Method and select Authenticator app. Click Add.

    • The system will prompt you to get the app for your smartphone. Use your phone’s app store to find and install the latest version of the Microsoft Authenticator app from Microsoft.

    • After the app is installed, click Next on the computer to continue setup. On your phone, select Work or school account from Add Account.

  • From the phone: tap QR code as the method of adding an account.

    • Follow the instructions on the computer to finish setting up the Authenticator app on your phone.  Note: you will need to allow the app to use your camera to scan the QR code.

  • From the computer: click Add Method and select Authenticator app. Click Add.

    • The system will prompt you to get the app for your smartphone. Use your phone’s app store to find and install the latest version of the Authenticator app from Microsoft.

    • After the app is installed, click Next on the computer to continue setup.  Follow the instruction on the computer to finish setting up the Authenticator app on your phone.  Note: you will need to allow the app to use your camera to scan the QR code.

7. At the Update your password prompt, enter a new password and then re-enter your new password in the “Confirm Password” field. Click Sign inPassword creation rules and guidelines can be found here.
8. Once your password has been successfully changed, you should see the “Welcome to Microsoft 365” window.

Step 2: Activate and access your Lawrence email

After setting up your account’s password and two-factor authentication, you'll have access to your official Lawrence email account (hosted in Microsoft Office). It will appear as one of your Apps in the left sidebar of the Lawrence University Account Center at lawrence.edu/mylu. Check your email regularly—even if it means forwarding it to your current personal account—because Lawrence faculty and staff will start sending critical information to that account immediately.

Logging into and accessing your email account:

  1. Navigate to: https://outlook.office.com/ (or click the Webmail App link in MyLU).

  2. Click on the Office 365 box (if you use the link, https://outlook.office.com/, it'll take you to the sign-in page for Outlook directly).

  3. At the sign-in box, enter your username with @lawrence.edu added to the end of it (i.e. smithj@lawrence.edu).

  4. At the password field, enter the password you created upon activation of your account (see Step 1 above).

  5. The Security info page will display to setup your Dual Factor Authentication Security.
**If you have already set up both phone and the app as your dual factor authentication methods, you won't see this page.

**If you have only one method of dual factor authentication set up, you will see this page every time you sign back into office.com

  6. Once you're logged into office.com, you'll see the main page with the words “Welcome to Office, YOUR NAME”.
**If you used the link https://outlook.office.com/, it'll take you directly to your email.

  7. Look to the left-hand side of the page for Apps - click on it. It'll take you to the list of Microsoft applications you'll have access to, including your email.

  8. To pin them to the sidebar of your homepage, hover over the individual application to see the 3 dots appear, click on the 3 dots, and select the Pin option.

  9. Click on Outlook - it'll open your email in a new window.

  10. If you don't see Outlook or any applications listed under Apps, please take a screenshot and email to the helpdesk by email helpdesk@lawrence.edu

Step 3: Access Voyager, Star Rez, the Bookstore

Voyager is Lawrence University’s student information system—the online place where you’ll be able to register for classes and (eventually) check your grades. Star Rez is the system where you will check your housing portal for your room assignment, place requests, and see your meal plan. The Bookstore is the sytem where you will place orders for books for your classes - both in physical and digital format.

To access your Voyager account, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to Voyager at https://bannerweb.lawrence.edu/.

  2. Click on the Students, Faculty, Staff link.

  3. At the prompt enter your Username@lawrence.edu and password which you created and activated in the above steps.

To access your Star Rez and Bookstore accounts, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to Star Rez using this link. Select the Student-SSO login option. It may or may not prompt for a password versus signing you in immediately.

  2. Log on to the Bookstore using this link. Select Login, and you should be prompted to enter your credentials on the next screen (it'll say CAS - Lawrence University).

Your Technology To-Do List:

Listed below are some things you need to do at home before bringing your devices to campus:

  • Technology Equipment Checklist:

    • Bring a lengthy (20’-25’) network cable. If you have a gaming device, a desktop computer, or if some of your classes are being held online, a wired connection is preferred. NOTE: Personally owned wireless access points or wireless routers are NOT allowed to be used on campus because they interfere with the Lawrence provided wireless network.

    • Network Port: Bring a device that has a wired network port or bring the appropriate adapter to connect to the network port (using the network cable) in your room. A Nintendo Switch especially needs a USB-C to Ethernet adapter in order to be wired in and registered. If a TV doesn't have an ethernet adapter, it will need a Roku or Apple TV or similar device to connect to the network. A USB-C to Ethernet adapter will not work to connect the TV to network

    • Bring a webcam and headset/earbuds with mic. If your device doesn't already have a built-in webcam, a separate webcam will be needed. We also recommend bringing a headset or earbuds with mic setup in the event your classes or other events are hosted online.

    • Mini-hub check out: If both you and your roommate plan to make wired connections to the Lawrence network, or if you're bringing more than two devices that need to have a wired connection, one of you will need to check out a mini-hub from Technology Services. This device allows multiple devices to be connected through one data port. There is no charge to borrow a mini-hub. If the mini-hub is not returned or is returned damaged at the end of the school year, there will be a $50.00 charge (in addition to a $20 processing fee) applied to your student account. Mini-hubs can be obtained from the IT Help Desk, Library Room 201.

  • Check your system. To connect to the Lawrence network, Technology Services recommends the following minimum configurations.

  • Wireless access to the campus network is available on campus.  Wireless access is available throughout campus.

  • Information about gaming systems and streaming media devices

  • Print and read the following instructions for access to the Internet, personal network space and printers: Connecting to the LU Network

  • Security Patches and Service Packs: Install all available security patches for your operating system. If you are running a Windows computer, you must also have current service packs installed. Your computer will be scanned for these files during the network registration process. If security patches and the service packs (Windows computers only) are not in place, you will NOT be able to register your computer. To find and download the current security patches for your operating system, see:

    • Windows Update Check

    • Apple: Choose Software Update from your Apple menu

  • Anti-Virus software: Technology Services strongly recommends anti-virus software for all computers. Windows 10/11 should already have Microsoft Defender installed by default, but it may need to be updated in order for the PC to work on the Lawrence network. Window computers MUST have an up-to-date antivirus program installed in order to register on the LU Network. Information on anti-virus software for other operating systems can be found here. Note – you may download the software from on or off campus. For both Windows and Apple computers it is strongly recommended that the built-in firewall be activated.

  • Wireless Only Devices such as gaming consoles (ex. Wii U) or wireless only streaming media players (ex. Amazon Echo or Fire TV Stick, Google Chromecast, Roku players) are NOT allowed on our wireless network. If you have such a device which is wireless connection only, you will NOT be able to use it on our network. Gaming consoles and streaming devices with wired connections can be used on the network.

  • Other devices: Lawrence allows each student up to ten different devices to be registered on our wired/wireless network, including computers, tablets, and smartphones.
