The library is dedicated to the success of all members of the Lawrence community and is happy to provide assistance and access to the tools needed to accomplish this goal. The following is a list of the ways we've worked to make the library more accessible to those with disabilities and differences. Contact us to let us know if there are any other ways we can help!

Software

  • ZoomText Screen Enlarger software is installed on the listening station computer outside the makerspace on the first floor.
  • Mac computers located in a first floor listening station and the second floor ITC computer lab have built-in assistive technologies. These can be activated from individual login accounts by going to system preferences, selecting the person icon, then selecting the desired tool.
  • Text-to-speech software to assist with reading and writing is available through Accessibility Services. See their Educational Technology page for software and license availability.

Equipment

  • A variety of audio and video recording devices are available to be checked out from the library. See the equipment guide to see a list of equipment and fill out the borrowing equipment form to make a reservation to check one out.
  • iPads are available for students who may require assistive technology. An iPad offers built-in features such as VoiceOver screen reading, Zoom screen magnifier, assistive touch, audio and video recording, and more as described on the iOS accessibility page. as well as third-party assistive apps in the App Store. Contact Media Services to arrange an iPad loan.
  • Noise reduction ear muffs can be checked out from the circulation desk.
  • Portable/foldable dry erase boards 

Spaces

  • Student offices located on the second and fourth floors can be requested by students with accessibility requirements. Submit the student office request form to apply.
  • Many computer stations on the first floor of the library are wheelchair accessible.
  • The Center for Academic Success on the second floor of the library building includes spaces for quiet test-taking. Contact the CAS to make arrangements.

Services

  • Library items can be retrieved from the shelves for patrons by selecting "place on hold" in an item's record when logged in to the library catalog. Please contact us with any questions about this process.
  • Our reference librarians are happy to spend time helping students learn how to navigate through the library's many databases and resources or just help you learn more about the library. Schedule a reference appointment and a reference librarian will arrange a time to work with you one-on-one.

 

    Parking

    The nearest accessible parking is available behind the library. There are two designated spots with additional space between them for a ramp or lift. These spaces can be accessed from Lawe Street.

    • More spots are available in the parking lot next to the Memorial Chapel, across College Ave. This lot can be accessed from Washington Street, then turning onto Union Street.
