Academic advising at Lawrence seeks to empower each student to craft and pursue a transformative liberal arts experience that prepares them for impactful and personally fulfilling lives. Faculty advisors support students in planning and achieving their educational goals, facilitate connections to campus resources and communities, and guide students to make informed decisions as they pursue their academic interests and aspirations. 

Course Planning for New and Exploring Students

The English Department offers two majors--English: Creative Writing and English: Literature. Students are not required to choose a major straight away.

Anyone interested in either major may begin with any 100- or 200-level course (so long as they meet the prerequisites for 200-level courses). Those interested in Creative Writing will want to take ENG 180: Introduction to Creative Writing, but it need not be their first English course.

100-level courses are an especially good choice for students who are in their first year at Lawrence, though they should think carefully about whether they want to take a writing-intensive course (those marked with a "W") in the same term as First-Year Studies.

AP/IB Credit 

Students who have earned a 4 or 5 on the AP English Language & Composition exam will earn 6 units of ENG electives, though no advanced standing in English will be awarded. Students who have earned a 4 or 5 on the AP English Literature & Composition will earn 6 units of ENG electives, which will count as the equivalent of a 100-level English course.

Declare a Major/Minor

All students are expected to declare a major before the end of sophomore year. Ideally, sophomore students will declare a major (and switch to an advisor in the major) before advance registration advising begins in spring term.

DECLARE A MAJOR/MINOR

Major Advising

All students will transition to a major advisor upon declaration. The major advisor will help students plan their coursework to satisfy requirements for the major, select courses in other areas to complement the major or satisfy personal interests, and prepare for their Senior Experience. Minor Advising

Students do not need an official advisor for the Creative Writing minor. Instead, Creative Writing minors are encouraged to consult with any of the Creative Writing faculty for advice on course selection and satisfying minor requirements.
