I teach courses in creative writing, particularly fiction and nonfiction, as well as contemporary American literature. I'm the author of several books, including the novels, Everything We Could Do and Liberal Arts, the memoirs, A Door in the Ocean, and One Day You'll Thank Me, and the story collection, The End of the Straight and Narrow. A new nonfiction book, The Channel: The History, Science, and Insanity of the World's Most Famous Swim is forthcoming in 2028.
My work has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, The American Scholar, Yale Review, Harvard Review, Creative Nonfiction, Best American Sports Writing and other periodicals. I'm a regular contributor to Men's Health and a columnist for Swimmer magazine.
