Jake Frederick specializes in colonial Mexican history. He is the author of Riot! Tobacco, Reform, and Violence in Eighteenth-Century Mexico (Sussex, 2016), and co-author, with Tatiana Seijas, of Spanish Dollars and Sister Republics: The Money That Made Mexico and the United States (Rowman and Littlefield, 2017). He is a recent recipient of a Newberry Library fellowship and is currently researching firefighting and fire prevention in eighteenth-century Mexico. Professor Frederick’s courses include “The Rise and Fall of American Empires,” “Race and Ethnicity in Latin America,” and “Disasters that Made The Americas,” as well as surveys of Latin American history.
