Lawrence University will get a visit from a five-time Grammy Award-winning musician when Zakir Hussain brings his tour to Lawrence Memorial Chapel on April 6.
The concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m., will also feature Sabir Khan and Debopriya Chatterjee in the trio Tisra. It is part of Lawrence’s annual Performing Arts Series. Tickets are $25 to $30 and available at the Lawrence Box Office or by calling 920-832-6749.
Hussain is a legendary classical tabla player, revered not only in his native India but the world over. In February, he won three 2024 Grammy Awards, raising his Grammy tally to five.
“If there is such a thing as a tabla superstar, Zakir Hussain is it,” writes the Chicago Tribune.
Hussain’s current tour features a classical Indian trio with Sabir Khan on sarangi and Debopriya Chatterjee on bansuri, two of India’s most accomplished traditional instrumentalists.
Hussain was part of three 2024 Grammy wins—two with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia, and a third with John McLaughlin in the fusion band Shakti.
He is renowned in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as a virtuoso musician.
Tisra showcases rich folk and classical Indian traditions, with the trio comprised of tabla, sarangi, and bansuri (bamboo flute).
