Guests relax on the deck of the main lodge during a 2019 summer seminar at Bjorklunden.

Björklunden, Door County

It’s time to plan your visit to Björklunden, Lawrence University’s Door County retreat center, home to an annual series of weeklong seminars geared toward lifelong learners.

Registration has opened for more than 35 seminars, stretching from mid-June through late October. Another half dozen online seminars are available. Fondly referred to as “vacations with a purpose,” the seminars range from explorations of history and world politics to literature and the arts.

“These offerings reflect a broad breadth of learning opportunities that invite you to immerse yourself in fascinating topics and enriching experiences,” said Thomas McKenzie, director of Björklunden. “Each course will generate rich conversation and surface new insights among friends old and new. Join us along beautiful Lake Michigan for a season of discovery.”

Björklunden is located along the shore of Lake Michigan just south of Baileys Harbor in Door County.

Björklunden spans 441 acres along Lake Michigan in Door County.

Björklunden is located just south of Baileys Harbor in Door County. It is home to a magnificent two-story lodge, a handcrafted wooden chapel, and a variety of other facilities. Bequeathed to Lawrence in 1963, Donald and Winifred Boynton’s beloved summer home now advances Lawrence’s commitment to challenging and illuminating education experiences.

Seminar participants will share community with each other while enjoying the beauty of the 441-acre retreat along pristine Lake Michigan shoreline.

Open to the public and led by academic, artistic, and cultural leaders, the seminars generally begin Sunday evening and end Friday afternoon. There also are Sunday through Wednesday and Sunday through Saturday options. Seminar residents will lodge and dine at Björklunden. You also have the option to register as a commuter (Sunday dinner and lunches included) or an auditor (no lodging or food). Meals are prepared by Björklunden’s resident chef. Participants will have flexible afternoon time when they can enjoy walking the trails, spending time in the lodge, touring the Boynton Chapel, engaging in other optional programs, or exploring Door County’s many cultural, recreational, and culinary offerings.
