Thanks to the generosity of many donors, construction has now begun on a $35 million campus center for Lawrence University. Intended as a new home for functions currently housed in Memorial Union and Jason Downer Commons, the center will be located on the south side of John Street between Sage Hall (to the east) and Lawe Street (to the west). A 60-foot wide pedestrian land bridge across Lawe Street will connect John Street and the center with the rest of the campus to the west. The beginning of construction climaxes more than 19 years of discussions and planning involving Lawrence students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees.

The building has been designed with full attention to energy conservation, environmental friendliness, and green building standards. It will qualify for LEED Silver certification.
Planning and design of the building were led by Uihlein-Wilson Architects of Milwaukee, the architect of record for the project, with assistance from KSS Architects of Princeton, NJ, Boldt Construction of Appleton, and a number of other engineering, architectural, and design firms. Input into the design process from Lawrence University was coordinated through the campus center planning committee, chaired first by Nancy Truesdell, dean of students, and then by Lynn Semple Hagee, ’58, director of conferences and summer programs.
Site clearing began in March 2007; construction is projected for completion in the late winter of 2009; Lawrence will begin using the building in the spring of 2009.
