Presented here is a four-minute video excerpt from an independent study project prepared by Lawrence University Conservatory of Music
student David Werfelmann, Class of 2006. The audio/video clip may be played in various formats presented below.
Werfelmann's project was to take the 1926 silent movie The Black Pirate, starring Douglas Fairbanks, and compose a 12-minute musical score to accompany the film. In doing so, Werfelmann worked with composition professor Joanne Metcalf, director of jazz and improvisional music Fred Sturm, Lawrence University Symphony Orchestra conductor David Becker, Conservatory director of recording Larry Darling, and director of instructional technology David Berk.
To record the soundtrack, Werfelmann conducted 52 student musicians from the Conservatory of Music in a performance of the original score. The soundtrack was then edited to fit the action scenes of the silent film.
