The following is a list of student organizations at Lawrence University that address political and/or activist issues. For a complete, updated list of student organizations, please refer to the Involvement Guidebook.

Afro Caribbean Club

The Afro Caribbean Club serves as an avenue for students of African and Caribbean descent to preserve their heritage, and cultural identity while away from their country. ACC seeks to support and strengthen each other while bringing the warmth of our culture to all interested members of the Lawrence community.

Amnesty International

Affiliated with the international organization of the same name, Amnesty International is a worldwide campaigning movement that seeks to promote the human rights embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. In particular, the group works to free prisoners of conscience; ensure fair and prompt trial for political prisoners; abolish the death penalty, torture, and other cruel treatment; end political killings; and oppose human rights abuses by opposition groups.

Asia-A

Asia-A is dedicated to bringing together students of Asian heritage and culture with others to promote, educate about, celebrate and support the rich cultures of Asia and Asian Americans.

Black Organization of Students (BOS)

BOS brings together students of AfricanAmerican heritage with others to promote, educate about, celebrate, and support the rich AfricanAmerican cultural heritage and many contributions to life in America. It also provides social events for all interested students.

Campus Organization for Israel (COFI)

COFI's mission is to build support and appreciation for the state of Israel -- its people, culture, language and institutions. The group works collaboratively with other student organizations on a variety of projects, promotes cultural events, business fairs, Hebrew learning, and potential academic exchanges and internship opportunities.

College Democrats

The College Democrats organization provides a forum to express liberal perspectives and offers opportunities to meet with local, state, and national political figures. Members often support various Democratic campaigns. The club also plays host to visiting candidates and encourages student voter registration and participation in elections.

College Republicans

The College Republicans organization provides a forum to express conservative perspectives and offers opportunities to meet with local, state, and national political figures. Downer Feminist Council (DFC)

Downer Feminist Council is a feminist organization that invites all students to work together to identify, assess, and address gender issues on the campus and beyond. DFC promotes gender equality through discussion, education, and political action.

GLOW (Gay, Lesbian, Other or Whatever)

GLOW is dedicated to enhancing and sustaining awareness of and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual,and transgender individuals and issues within the campus community. GLOW functions within both programming and outreach capacities. All are welcome at meetings.

Greenfire

Greenfire, Lawrence’s environmental group, is dedicated to helping the environment on local, state, and national levels. It is involved in activities to educate the Lawrence community about general and specific problems facing the natural world and also in taking action to rehabilitate damaged environments. Greenfire sponsors events, hosts speakers, runs a variety of campaigns, and encourages both individuals and the institution to reduce environmental impact.

Lawrence International (LI)

Lawrence International aims to help international students adjust to life at Lawrence and in Appleton, to provide a forum for international and domestic students to meet and engage in conversation, and to provide programs on world issues for Lawrence and the Appleton community. All interested students are welcome to attend meetings.

Lawrence University Model United Nations (LUMUN)

The Lawrence University Model United Nations is dedicated to promoting awareness of political and economic international affairs, both on the campus and in the community, and to promoting awareness of the United Nations, its procedures, and role within the world. Members participate in Model United Nations competition both regionally and nationally.

McCarthy Cooperative House (Co-op)

The members of the Co-op seek to extend the principles of a liberal arts education into the living environment. Members work cooperatively to prepare meals, care for their residential facilities, budget, plan programs and activities, and provide service to campus and community. The group usually embraces environmental and social justice issues, prepares organically grown foods, and purchases in a socially responsible manner. All students may apply to participate in the cooperative.

People for Animal Welfare (PAW)

PAW promotes awareness of animal rights issues and animal welfare. Members engage in political debate, participate in demonstrations with Animal Welfare League, sponsor campus educational programs and discussions, and work with the local Humane Society.

Students for Leftist Action (SLA)

Students for Leftist Action offers students an opportunity to work for social justice, progressive economics and democracy, nonviolence, the protection of civil liberties, and address various issues 9 from a liberal or progressive perspective. SLA hosts guest speakers, promotes awareness and letterwriting campaigns, and sets up displays to heighten student awareness.

Student War Against Hunger and Poverty (SWAHP)

Affiliated with the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, SWAHP holds educational programs and promotes volunteer action to address hunger and homelessness in the local community and beyond. The group annually hosts the Feinstein Challenge on campus, raising thousands of food items for local food pantries and bringing together campus groups, individual students, and children from several local elementary schools in the process. Membership is open to all interested Lawrentians.

V-Day

VDay promotes awareness of women’s issues, particularly those related to the abuse of women, through a variety of programs and activities including the annual presentation of the Vagina Monologues. The organization welcomes all students interested in women’s concerns.

Viking Conservatives

Formed to promote discussion and help students understand the conservative agenda, Viking Conservatives hold weekly meetings, host campus discussions and programs, and promote conservative causes.

¡VIVA!

Viva is an organization dedicated to promoting substantive cultural discourse. We are open to any individual who is interested in participating regardless of race, gender, religion, class, creed, or national origin. We as a group would like to expand awareness of Hispanic Culture reaching members both within the Lawrence Campus and the greater community. Through campus programming, special events, speakers, field trips, and community service projects we hope to promote a better understanding of Hispanic Culture.
