Individual Career Counseling

One on one career counseling is available to assist students in identifying their values, interests, skills, needs and motives. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments to discuss career options; résumé and cover letter writing; interviewing techniques; job search strategies; graduate or professional school opportunities; internships; summer jobs; and networking. The staff of the center also use these appointments to assure that each student understands fully the resources available to them through the Career Center.

Interest Inventories

The Career Center provides interest inventories and other standardized assessments to help individuals or groups identify and understand their interests and personality types that may have an impact on their career choices. Inventories such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Strong Interest Inventory, and the Campbell Interest and Skills Survey are administered and interpreted by trained, professional counselors at the Career Center.

Alumni Network

Lawrence University alumni are often willing to assist undergraduates and other alumni in career exploration. The Career Center calls on alumni to offer advice and suggestions to those who are exploring and evaluating potential careers. Alumni provide information about geographic locations and the realities of a career in their field.

On-Campus Programs / Workshops

To help students make better informed decisions about the options they elect to pursue, the Career Center brings visitors (including alumni and parents) to campus to talk about career-related topics. Recent programs have included Careers in Book Publishing, Environmental Careers, Breaking Into Advertising, Working on Capitol Hill, Public Service Careers, and A Career in Business Consulting.

On-Campus Recruitment

This program brings employers to campus to screen candidates for full time employment and summer internships.

Video-taped Practice Interviews

A key component to landing that perfect job or internship or gaining acceptance to graduate school is the interview. The Career Center staff conducts practice interviews complete with helpful suggestions about how to improve one's interview performance.

Career / Graduate School Fairs

Lawrence University joins with the nineteen other Wisconsin private colleges to sponsor the annual Workforce Career and Internship Fair held in Milwaukee. Employers from a variety of fields collect and and screen résumés for full time employment and internships.

Internships

Internships provide a valuable opportunity for students to put their education into action. Lawrence University supports a wide variety of internships in virtually any area of interest. The Career Center, which houses the internship program, has a searchable database of opportunities, as well as books and electronic resources to help students identify potential internship sites. The Career Center staff will meet with students individually or in groups to discuss internship possibilities. Many students also take advantage of the option of earning academic credit for their experience.

Recommendation Service

Students and alumni may place letters of recommendation on file in the Career Center. Upon receipt of written permission, the center will then forward copies to potential employers, graduate or professional schools.
