The following are letters sent to students who came before the Honor Council during Term III, 2002.


You have been found in violation of the Lawrence University Honor Code for plagiarism on your final exam in ______________ with Professor ____________.

As discussed and agreed upon during the sanctioning conference on Tuesday, October 1, your sanction will be zero on assignment and two-letter grade reduction in course.  Be advised that should you be found in violation of the Honor Code in the future, the information contained in this letter will be used in determining appropriate sanctions.

The Council wishes to remind you of the importance of confidentiality.  Details from the sanctioning conference may not be released without the consent of all individuals involved.  This includes students and professors and as you know, sanctions agreed upon during this conference cannot be appealed.

You have been found in violation of the Lawrence University Honor Code for plagiarism on your paper in ____________________ with Professor ______________. 

You have taken the language, style, and structure from a source without citation or have cited incorrectly.  Regardless of intent, the plagiarism in your work constitutes an Honor Council violation because it still advances your own performance unfairly in as much as it represents another’s work as your own.

_____________, you have unfairly advanced your academic performance and violated the mutual trust between students and faculty upon which the University depends.  Consequently, you have been assigned a sanction of zero on assignment and a two letter grade reduction in course.  The sanction represents the severity of the violation and is consistent with the sanctions attached to similar violations in the past.  In addition, we strongly recommend that you see Dean Gajewski before your next paper assignment to discuss proper citation.

Be advised that should you be found in violation of the Honor Code again, this letter will be used in determining an appropriate sanction.

You have been found in violation of the Lawrence University Honor Code for plagiarism on your term paper in ___________________ with Professor ____________________. 

Despite your absence from the September 18 hearing, the Council chose to proceed with your hearing because you were informed on a letter dated September 6 that the hearing would take place on September 18 and you were told to contact Dean Gajewski should you be unable to attend.  Both Dean Gajewski and Jason Hanna, Honor Council chairperson, had made several attempts to reach you well in advance of the hearing.

________________, you have unfairly advanced your academic performance and violated the mutual trust between students and faculty upon which the University depends.  Consequently, you have been assigned a sanction of 0 on assignment and F in course.  In addition, because this is your third violation of the Honor Code, the Honor Council will make a recommendation to the full Faculty Subcommittee on Administration that you be separated from the university. If the subcommittee accepts this recommendation, you will not be able to attend classes or participate as a student at Lawrence. The sanction represents the severity of the violation and is consistent with the sanctions attached to similar violations in the past.
