POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

REPORTS TO:                        Senior Custodian (where applicable) and Custodial Services Manager

 

LOCATION:                           WARCH CAMPUS CENTER

 

Hiring for Part-Time and 2 Full-Time Custodians; hours and shifts will vary.

 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

 

Perform a variety of custodial duties including cleaning, room preparation, moving furniture and supplies, assist with special functions setups when required, snow removal, minor maintenance, and building security.

 

DUTIES:

 

1.         Satisfy students' requests and complaints, or communicate them to supervisor.

 

2.         Sweep, wet and/or dry mop, wax and/or buff inside floors; vacuum carpets and stairways; sweep outside entrances, stairs, approaches, and fire escapes. 

 

            a.         Sweep, shovel and/or chip snow and ice from outside entrances, stairs and approaches, and spread salt.

 

3.         Dust, vacuum, wipe and/or wash shelves and ledges, furniture, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, shower stalls, light fixtures, glass at entrances, insides and outsides of windows, etc.; keep bathrooms supplied with tissue and paper towels.  Spot wash walls, windows, ceilings, stairwells, furniture, and carpets. 

 

4.         Empty wastebaskets, ashtrays into fireproof containers, etc., into large waste containers; carry containers to trash chutes or central trash areas; empty containers into, and clear chutes; wash baskets and containers. 

 

5.         Make minor repairs such as fastenings, replacement of light bulbs, etc.; advise supervisor of need for repair service.

 

            a.         Assist maintenance workers, as required, when working in assigned areas.

 

6.         Assist with special projects on an as-needed basis. 

 

            a.         During term breaks and summer, clean assigned areas thoroughly.  Move furniture out of and into rooms; remove trash; wash walls, woodwork, windows, blinds, light fixtures, furniture, closets, screens, etc.; scrub, strip, seal, add floor finish, and/or burnish floors; shampoo carpets and rugs; and wash or send drapes to cleaner; etc.  May clean mattresses and change covers.

 

            b.         May request rental beds (if needed), bedding, towels, soap, etc. for guests in students' rooms.

 

            c          May prepare linens for laundry pickup.

 

            d          Lift and/or move furniture, etc., in assigned areas.  Assist with loading and unloading of furniture delivered by truck.

 

            e.         Visually inspect fire extinguishers for evidence of tampering, and report problems to supervisor.

 

7.         Order cleaning, bathroom, etc. supplies; store and carry supplies to various floors; transfer some bulk supplies to smaller containers. 

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

Will exist with all students in the assigned residence facilities.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

 

1.         Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

 

2.         Must be able to climb 12 ft stepladder.

 

3.         Previous custodial experience is desired.

 

4.         Position requires continuous walking, standing, stooping, and bending.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

 

1.         Carpet extractor, floor scrubber, high-speed burnisher, automatic scrubber, upright and canister vacuum cleaners, clothes washer and dryer, and basic portable tools.

 

2.         6-foot, 8-foot and 12ft stepladders, and hand truck or dolly.

 

3.         Cleaning tools, wet and dry mops, broom, snow shovel, snow blower, ice scraper, and basic hand tools.
