Steininger wins high jump to pace Vikings at MWC Championships

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- Madeline Steininger won the high jump to pace the Lawrence University track and field teams at the Midwest Conference Championships at Carroll University on Friday and Saturday.

Steininger (New Berlin, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI) won the high jump with a school-record jump of 5 feet, 5.25 inches. She broke the record of 5-4 set by Vickie Leathers in 1993. The winning jump also qualified Steininger for the NCAA Division III Championships, set for May 21-23 at Marietta College.

Steininger also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.84 seconds and grabbed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16-2.5.

Also scoring for the Lawrence women were Tatiana Bulat (Madison, Wis./West), who took eighth in the triple jump at 32-11.75, and the 400 relay team, which was sixth in 52.86 seconds. Lawrence finished ninth in the team standings with 22 points.

Marva Goodson (Saginaw, Mich./Bridgeport) broke the Lawrence record in the preliminaries of the 200 meters with a time of 25.94 seconds, breaking the record of 26.13 set by Anna Huber in 1999. An injury prevented Goodson from running both the finals of the 100 and 200.

Mark Sprtel (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) and David Zane (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) were the top finishers for the Lawrence men, who finished ninth in the team standings with eight points. Sprtel took seventh in the 800 in 2:00.86, and Zane was seventh in the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:06.11.

The 400 relay team grabbed sixth place in 45.27 seconds, and the 1,600 relay team was eighth in 3:35.78.
