APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University standout Sam Laes has been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.
Laes, a junior from Green Bay, Wis., finished second at the North Central College Invitational after facing a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in back-to-back matches.
Wrestling at 184 pounds, Laes pinned Knox College's Calvin Zirkle in 1:45 in the quarterfinal match. The former star at Ashwaubenon High School then beat ninth-ranked Toby Boltz of Wheaton College 3-2 in the semifinals. North Central's Gabe Youel, ranked second, downed Laes 10-6 in the title match.
Laes, who is now 13-2 on the season, was honored as the Wrestler of the Week for the second time in his career. He also was chosen in December 2007.
The Vikings return to action on Thursday when they take on UW-La Crosse.
