Stefan L. Debbert

Assistant Professor of Chemistry
B.S., University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
M.S. and Ph.D., Cornell University

Research Interests:  Organic synthesis, supramolecular chemistry vis a vis molecular recognition and enzyme mimicry, computational chemistry

Prof. Debbert’s research group is currently working on the synthesis of novel macrocyclic polyamines.  These molecules may prove adept at catalyzing the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP); since tumor cells are often ATP-poor, so-called ATPase mimics may prove useful as anti-cancer compounds.  The group also works on the modification of calixarenes (large, cup-shaped oligophenols) to produce new molecules for use in both supramolecular and medicinal contexts.

The group is also more broadly interested in organic synthesis in general, and the Pauson-Khand cyclization in particular.  Students who are interested in developing problem-solving skills in a lab setting are encouraged to contact Prof. Debbert to discuss research opportunities.
