HYBRID ENSEMBLE (formerly “Jazz Singers”) is a newly reorganized ensemble comprised of 8-16 SATB singers and rhythm section. Although a good deal of our literature will focus on vocal jazz works, the ensemble will also explore a variety of literature from early music to experimental music, from newly composed works to world music. This ensemble will allow students to be exposed to a wide variety of works from all eras and genres of music, and assist in building skills in various styles of improvisation while exploring and experiencing the deep connections between disparate musical genres. The performance bar will be high and will require individual commitment and dedication from each member. The ensemble will present one concert each term, including assisting and hosting the annual Lawrence Jazz Weekend in November. Special Jazz Weekend guests have included such notable greats as: New York Voices, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling, Diana Krall, Kevin Mahogany, Jane Monheit, Elaine Elias, Michele Weir and Todd Buffa. The fall 2009 guest artist will be Steve March Tormé (son of Mel Tormé). The Friday night, November 8th concert will feature Mr. Tormé and the Hybrid Ensemble. In February 2010, the ensemble will be assisting guest artist, Bobby McFerrin, in a performance of Fred Sturm's Migrations.
