Summer Institute for Secondary School Teachers of Honors or Accelerated Courses

Lawrence University
Appleton, Wisconsin
June 24-29, 2007

The Summer Institute for Secondary School Teachers is an intense enrichment opportunity for those who teach Advanced Placement or other accelerated courses for high school students capable of college-level work. Classes, limited to 15 to 20 participants each, are taught primarily by Lawrence University faculty members, who also assist the participants with the development of curricula and materials appropriate to individual needs and interests. Special workshops are also held with experienced teachers.

Although many of these courses have content that is relevant to the AP curriculum, they are not specifically focused on it but include advanced content that virtually any teacher of an enriched, advanced, or AP course will find valuable.

Course Credit

Four or six units of graduate credit are available (equivalent to two or three semester hours). Both the four- and six-unit options meet all day Monday through Thursday and until noon on Friday. The six-credit option requires an additional paper or project that is completed and returned after the Summer Institute is completed. Lawrence does not offer graduate degrees, so the acceptability of the credits toward a graduate degree is at the discretion of the institution granting the degree. Lawrence is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Facilities

Participants are housed on the Lawrence campus and have access to various college resources, including the Seeley G. Mudd Library, science laboratories, computers, and the Buchanan Kiewit Recreation Center with its swimming pool, racquetball courts, and weight-training equipment.
