Extensive athletic facilities are available at Lawrence. In addition to the Banta Bowl, a 5,255-seat football stadium built into a natural ravine, and Whiting Field, with its eight-lane perma-track and baseball and softball fields, Lawrence has two gymnasiums. Alexander Gymnasium is dedicated to the intercollegiate sports program. The Buchanan Kiewit Recreation Center is the home of the intramural sports program, student recreation, and intercollegiate swimming and diving. A new soccer field opened west of Alexander Gymnasium in 2002.
Built in 1929 and fully renovated in 1986, Alexander Gym features two regulation-size basketball courts with hardwood floors, three volleyball courts, baseball/softball batting cages, a wrestling room, two racquetball courts, a weight room, and four locker rooms.
Conveniently located in the heart of campus and built into a hillside overlooking the Fox River, the Buchanan Kiewit Center contains an Olympic-size swimming pool with separate diving well, moveable bulkhead, electronic timing, and underwater viewing area. A 12,000-square-foot gymnasium with a hardwood floor is used for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and fencing. The building also features an elevated four-lane jogging track, 2,500-square-foot exercise room, weight room featuring Nautilus and Universal equipment, and four racquetball courts. There are saunas in both the men's and women's locker rooms.
On the riverfront at the bottom of South Drew Street, a six-court tennis complex serves the varsity tennis teams and is also available for recreational use.
