Emilia Ciotti Hernandez, a government major focused on international relations, said her time at Lawrence has been marked by the freedom to explore and excel.
Alongside academics, the senior from New York City has been able to engage in student government and pursue her interest in theater.
“In everything I do here at Lawrence, I am welcomed and challenged, which I appreciate,” she said.
Hernandez found Lawrence through the Posse Foundation, a scholarship program that pairs students with universities across the country to ensure academic success and individual development. Like many students, she was undecided when she arrived at Lawrence. All it took was one political science class, and she was hooked. She said the professors in the Government department stand out to her, not just as teachers but as friends and mentors.
“They will always sit down with you if you are struggling in a class,” she said, “or if you want to talk about your future, or if you want to chat.”
With a range of career options before her, Hernandez has her eyes on the nonprofit sector, and plans to attend graduate school.
