Lawrence London Centre

Senegal Francophone Program (French language pre-requisite)

*************************************

The Lawrence University London Centre has long been the most popular choice for Lawrence students choosing off-campus study and we are delighted to announce that, effective in the 2009-10 academic year, students will benefit from improved facilities, staffing, and academic and programming resources, through a new partnership with the Foundation for International Education (FIE). For more information about this exciting development of our London Centre program, please see this announcement or contact Laura Zuege, Off-Campus Programs Coordinator.

Please see the Scholarships and Funding page for information that will help you fund your off-campus study experience. We encourage you to look into potential funding sources outside of the usual aid you receive to help alleviate additional expenses you might incur on an off-campus program.

Photo Show & Contest

The Off-Campus Programs Office recently organized a photo show and contest for students who have studied or were studying off campus. To see the 5 winning photographs and for more information about the contest, please see this page.

The application deadline for participating in affiliated and Lawrence-sponsored programs in 2009-2010 has passed. Lawrence-sponsored programs (the Lawrence London Centre & Francophone Seminar in Dakar Senegal) may still have some availability, so please inquire if you are interested.

The application deadline for affiliated programs for 2010-11 will be February 1, 2010 and Lawrence London Centre applications will be due April 7, 2010. Students wishing to participate in an affiliated program must turn in both the Lawrence application and the entire program-specific application (which is available on the program's web site). All application materials (references, transcripts, language proficiency forms, or other application requirements) must be to the Off-Campus Programs office in the International House by the stated application deadline.

It is strongly recommended that students interested in off-campus study make an introductory appointment with the off-campus program coordinator Laura Zuege — and, where available, faculty program advisors. These meetings help students establish academic goals, explore their off-campus options, and to discuss logistical issues such as timing of participation and the application process.

Off-campus study provides a valuable opportunity to hone and extend the intellectual skills and capacity for civic and political engagement associated with a Lawrence liberal arts education by placing students in educational settings that purposefully combine classroom and experiential learning. In such settings students are challenged to apply and question what has been learned on the home campus and to evaluate alternate perspectives and ways of learning.

Off-campus study also provides a rich opportunity for personal growth as students gain independence and self-confidence through active engagement with social and cultural practices different than their own and/or through the experience of educational or research settings whose pedagogical approaches and curricular structures differ from those at Lawrence.

Students who wish to study off-campus are encouraged to make an appointment with the Financial Aid office to discuss their financial expectations. Program costs vary widely and it is best to be prepared for the financial reality of your off-campus study decisions.

Campus visits in the fall and winter terms by representatives of the affiliated programs, as well as individual discussions with the program faculty and staff, provide an excellent opportunity to learn more. Please also consult your academic advisor, other faculty, students who have studied off-campus in the past, and the Off-Campus Programs Coordinator to gather as much information about the program(s) as possible.

Important note: Students wishing to participate in an affiliated program must turn in both the Lawrence application and the entire program-specific application (available on the program's web site).
