Freshman Studies has been the cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum for more than sixty years. In the last decade it has also been recognized as one of the most distinctive programs of its kind, earning us a $500,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

What makes the program so special? The fact that we do Freshman Studies together. The course is required of all incoming students, and the teaching staff is drawn from every division of the faculty. What's more-and this is very unusual-every section of the course uses the same syllabus. That means that everyone at Lawrence has a chance to study science and music, debate the issues raised by Plato and Chuang Tzu, and share in the excitement of liberal learning.
