The core of the English curriculum is literary history, the study of the acknowledged masterpieces of British and American prose and poetry. Closely related to that core are courses in English language; courses in composition and the writing of fiction and verse; and courses in special forms of literature --e.g., satire. The department is staffed by a talented faculty of scholars and writers of diverse interests united by a commitment to excellent teaching.
