Mursell House, which had been used for faculty housing, was refurbished and renamed the Mursell Education Center in 1967. Home to the Education Department until 2001, when Education moved to Briggs Hall, it now houses offices for Lawrence's student publications and the Lawrence University Community Council (LUCC), as well as the Office of Research Administration.
Mursell House is named after James Lockhart Mursell, a professor of psychology and philosophy at Lawrence College from 1923-35. The author of 32 books, Mursell was a leading innovator in music education and is credited with changing how music is taught in elementary and secondary schools throughout the nation.
