Volunteerism/Sharing Resources
Lawrence University and the Fox Valley
- Forty percent of Lawrence students engage in voluntary service and have been honored for their efforts on behalf of regional and community groups. In recent years, Lawrence students have established a Habitat for Humanity chapter, implemented an annual Relay for Life in support of cancer research, and designed a mentoring program with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Boys & Girls Club of the Fox Valley. - Each year Lawrence athletes, who represent 13 men's and ten women's sports, volunteer their time to organize and facilitate sports training camps for local youth.
- Through Summer Volunteer Opportunity Grants, Lawrence
students are able to devote their energies and talents to worthy
volunteer activities. Recent grantees have spent their summers assisting the Mead House for Troubled Youth and Joshua House, a receiving home for abused and neglected children.
- One of Lawrence's longest-standing volunteer programs, LARY (Lawrence Assistance Reaching Youth), encourages students to serve as mentors for at-risk elementary and middle school students in the Appleton area.
- Lawrence offers its facilities for use by the community. Several community organizations, including the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Attic Theatre, use Lawrence's Memorial Chapel and Music-Drama Center for their events and performances. In a cooperative arrangement with the Appleton Area School District, the Appleton West Terrors play their home games under the lights at the Banta Bowl.
- Each year more than 600 residents of the Fox Valley take advantage of the college's library resources and check out over 1,800 items from the Seeley G. Mudd collections. Lawrence also cooperates with the Outagamie County Historical Society on interlibrary loan services.
- Björklunden, Lawrence's 425-acre campus on
Lake Michigan in Door County, is home to a popular series of summer seminars
for adults, as well as weekend seminars
for students and faculty members during
the academic year. Björklunden's spacious lodge can be leased by local
groups for meetings, retreats, and conferences. The Boynton
Chapel, a small wooden chapel built in a late 12th-century Norwegian stave
church (stavkirke) style, can be rented for weddings and special services.
